XOLO Q1200 review – loaded with cool features

The Q1200 from XOLO comes with a 5 inch screen with HD resolution and with corning gorilla glass 3 protection. The handset runs on Jelly Bean but will get the KitKat update. XOLO Q1200 camera quality is above average and comes loaded with lot of cool effects.

The box pack contains the handset, free flip cover, screen guard (though it is not required), travel charger, data cable, OTG cable, earphone with earphone plug caps, SIM ejector pin, warranty booklet and user guide.

OS, Design and Display
The XOLO Q1200 runs on Android 4.2 out of the box with customized UI. XOLO will roll out KitKat update for Q1200 soon. The handset comes with a non-removable battery of 2000 mAh capacity. The body is a combination of aluminum and plastic.

Build quality and finishing is very good. The moment you hold the handset you will feel the weight it is 171 grams with battery. Q1200 is 7.26mm thick (+/- 0.3mm).

Power button and volume rockers are placed on the left and on the right side there is a single slot with space for micro SIM and micro SD card. The 3.5mm audio jack is on the top and at the bottom there is the micro USB port with mic.

The rear side is shiny metal (aluminum) + white plastic with matte finish. On the rear you will also find 2 speakers one on top near the camera and the other at the bottom. The camera lens is a little out.

Touch screen is 5 inches with corning gorilla glass 3 protection supporting resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Touch is responsive and very smooth. Viewing angles are pretty good. There is no LED notification light and the 3 navigational buttons do not light up. There are accelerometer, light, proximity and magnetic sensors.

Memory and Storage
This single SIM handset comes with on-board 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. 2GB space is allocated for apps (1.8GB free) and 3.9GB is the internal storage space. You can install / move some apps onto the external storage. Free RAM on the first boot is 694MB.

Performance
It’s using the 1.3GHz MT6582 quad core MediaTek chipset (cortex A7) with Mali 400 MP GPU (@500Mhz). Performance is lag free and much of it depends on the theme you choose as well as the Transition effects.

Benchmark scores

App Result
Quadrant 5512
Antutu 16828
Vellamo Browser (2213) Metal (628) Multicore (1253)
Nenamark 2 50.5fps
Multi Touch 5 point

Gaming
Modern combat 4 and Asphalt 8 (high visual quality) games played well. Both these games got installed on the external storage. Check the Q1200 video review at the end of this review.

Entertainment and Camera
The handset is powerful and can play FHD videos. There is 8MP rear AF camera with dual LED flash and 2MP front camera. The rear camera is using the Sony Exmor R sensor. The still and the video camera quality is very good. The interface comes loaded with many effects that makes photo shoot even more exciting. Just have a look at some of the images shot using the special effects option.

The LED flash output and the night shots are good. 1080p videos can be recorded, by default the video is set to fixed focus so make sure you change the settings to continuous focus.

Others
There are dual speakers and sound quality is same as experienced on other handsets. Dual speakers do produce a little louder sound but not much improvement in terms of quality. 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth worked well. This is single SIM handset, the SIM tray houses both the single SIM and micro SD card.

The flip cover is of a good quality, front and back has a layer of artificial leather. You will need to clip the flip cover with the handset. It is an ordinary flip cover that does not do anything special. The power button and volume rockers get hidden underneath the flip cover but can be accessed by directly pressing the cover (check video).

There are several other options like smart stay that will keep the screen on as long as you are looking at it. Then there is the smart wake option that can be used to start specific applications by simply drawing on the screen when the phone is in standby mode (without pressing the power button). Other features are Float Multi Task window and Non-touch operation (gesture / Air control).

Battery
There is 2000 mAh Li-po battery and it is non-removable. For the review I had disabled the power management, with power management on you can expect a little better performance. I ran the benchmark apps for 31 minutes – battery dropped by 14%.

I played the high end games for about 17 minutes – battery dropped by 9% and when I played 1080p video in a loop for 27 minutes with Wi-Fi on and at full brightness – battery dropped by 11%.

When playing heavy games you can expect battery backup of slightly over 3 hours. You can watch videos for just over 4 hours with full brightness and using loudspeaker mode.

Verdict
The XOLO Q1200 is a very good package with excellent camera and loaded with good themes. The handset is priced at Rs. 13,439 on Flipkart, though you can get it for as low as Rs. 12,700 from local stores.

It is a hard choice to make as there are many options available in the market using the 1.3GHz quad core processor, moreover the Q1200 is single SIM. However when it comes to the camera the Q1200 does stands out.

Rating :- 4/5.
