Wammy Passion X comes with what WickedLeak calls as the world’s first hydrophobic smartphone. The Aqua protect technology makes the handset water proof to a certain extent. This is an Octa Core powered handset running Android 4.2 with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. It is priced at approx Rs. 20,000 (for a limited period).
Passion X Box Pack
The box pack is a bit different, black color with the new WickedLeak logo that looks cool much better. Inside you will find the handset, data cable, travel charger, 2500 mAh battery and a leaflet that explains about the new Aqua Protect technology and the preventive steps to be taken in case of accidental or incidental exposure to liquids. WickedLeak is also proving warranty in case the handset gets damaged cause of liquid exposure (do check their warranty terms). There is no earphone included.
Design and Display
The handset follows the same design pattern as seen on the Wammy Passion Z and Passion Z+ handsets. Passion X is pretty light weight at 137 grams with dimensions 68.92 x 141.02 x 9.15mm. The build quality is good but as seen on the Z and the Z+ the back cover does not fit properly leaving out small gaps that may look a bit odd.
The volume rockers are on left, power button on right, micro USB at the bottom and 3.5mm audio jack on the top. The rear side is white color matte finish. The rear side looks uneven probably cause of the aqua coating. WickedLeak told me that it was a demo unit and that the consumer version will be clean and smooth.
The display screen is 5 inches supporting 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. The viewing angle is very good. There are dedicated navigation buttons. No issues with the touch – it’s very smooth and responsive. There is accelerometer, proximity, magnetic, gyro and light sensors.
Memory, Storage and OS
The Wammy Passion X runs on Android 4.2.2 with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The free RAM on the first boot is 1.3GB and of the 16GB storage 3.94GB is allocated for apps and 9.67GB as internal storage. There is micro SD card slot that can house 64GB cards. App / Games can be installed on the external storage. OTG is supported.
Performance
It’s Octa core MediaTek MT6592 chipset Cortex A7 clocked at 1.6GHz with Mali 450 MP GPU. The performance is pretty good and lag free.
Benchmark scores
- Quadrant Standard – 14728.
- AnTuTu – 25837.
- Vellamo – HTML5 1935, Metal 621.
- Nenamark 2 – 47.5 fps
- Multi touch : 5 points.
Entertainment and Gaming
The Wammy Passion X can play full HD videos. I test it out using MX player in both S/W and H/W modes.
I installed the MC4 and the Asphalt 8. The Modern combat 4 was very smooth and the Asphalt 8 also worked pretty well in high visual quality mode. Both the games got installed on the external storage.
Camera
The rear camera is 13MP as mentioned on the box but in the camera app it shows 12MP. The front camera as mentioned on the box is 2MP but in the camera app it’s 5MP. Rear camera is with LED flash support. The still photography is good and so are the full HD videos.
The full HD videos are getting recorded in 16fps. I tried 1080p and 720p but in both cases the fps was 16. Wickedleak will roll out an update to bring it to 30fps.
Others
Sound is quite loud and clear. This is dual SIM handset with dual standby mode. The SIM slot 1 is micro SIM and SIM 2 is normal SIM. There is 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. No issues found with any of these. The GPS works great; you will get a lock within 5 seconds and at times almost instantly.
2500 mAh battery
The Wammy passion X comes with 2500 mAh battery. When I ran all of the benchmark apps for about 26 minutes the battery dropped by 20% and while playing the two mentioned games for about 12 minutes the battery dropped by 9%.
I played the game again with battery at 5% and it played longer than expected probably the battery is not calibrated. The battery backup looks good you might want to charger a few cycles to get the % right. It played Asphalt 8 for 39 minutes from 5% before the phone shut down. You can play games for about 4 to 6 hours on a full charge.
Underwater test
Pls check the video review. We placed the handset in ‘switched on’ mode underwater for 30 minutes and then left it to dry for almost 8 hours, it survived.
Verdict
The key highlight is the water resistant technology the Aqua Protect that helps protect the handset from water and other liquids. Over all the handset is good, performance is at par as compared with other Octa core processor. The 1080p is with 16fps but that will be fixed soon via OTA update.
