WickedLeak Wammy Neo is a low cost octa core powered handset that runs Android 4.2 with a good 2GB RAM and 8GB storage. The screen of 5 inches supports 720p resolution. This dual SIM handset uses the 1.7GHz octa core processor – all this for just Rs. 11,990.

The Neo is also available in optional AquaProtect version that makes it waterproof to some extent. For the AquaProtect version you will need to spend Rs. 1500 extra.

Inside the Box: The Wammy Neo (with factory fitted screen guard), Flip cover with S-View window, on box it is mentioned 2200 mAh battery but inside there is 2800 mAh battery, data cable, travel charger, standard quality earphone and user guide.

OS, Design and Display
The Neo runs on Android 4.2.2 out of the box, on their official website (Wickedleak.org) they have mentioned that the handset will get the KitKat 4.4 update. The handset is slim, got a professional look, comfortable to hold and curvier on the sides.

The back is white color with matte finish. Handset is also available in black color in case black is your choice. There are few gaps between the back panel and the handset body especially when the battery is inserted. Not a big issue but it will be easily visible on the white handset. And the back panel is not that easy to remove and fit back. The gaps actually spoil the looks. Moreover the wicked leak logo on the back has been shabbily done and it can be easily removed (good for those who complain about the Wickedleak logo).

Wicked leak Wammy Neo review and unboxing

Neo weight with battery is 144 grams and dimensions are 71.52mm x 144.50mm x 8.56mm. Micro USB is at the bottom along with the mic, volume rockers on the left, power button on the right and 3.5mm audio jack on the top. Build quality is good.

The screen is 5 inches OGS IPS and comes with a factory fitted screen guard. Resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels with 16m colours. Colour reproduction is good and touch is smooth and responsive. Though I think the touch response will get even better if the screen guard is removed (but not advisable).

This is a dual SIM handset with overlapping SIM slots, you need a normal SIM and a micro SIM. Interestingly the handset comes with magnetic sensors too, one would have assumed it to be missing considering the price tag. There are accelerometer, light, proximity, orientation and magnetic sensors. There is LED notification and you can also change the colour as per your liking.

Memory and Storage
For the price WickedLeak has managed to get in 2 GB RAM and 8 GB storage. Of the 2 GB RAM, 1.4 GB is available on the first boot and of the 8GB storage 4.28 GB is allocated for phone storage and 1.97 GB as the internal space for apps.

Performance
The Wammy Neo is sailing on 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa core processor with Mali 450 GPU. Performance is lag free.

Benchmark scores

App Result
Quadrant 16510
Antutu 25446
Vellamo Browser (2440) Metal (688) Multicore (1541)
Nenamark 2 59.2fps
Multi Touch 5 point

Gaming and Entertainment
This octa core powered handset can easily play full HD videos. For gaming I downloaded Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 4 that got installed on the external storage. Game play was smooth. Asphalt 8 was also playable in high visual quality mode but I could see the frame freezing for fraction of a second. The same improved when the visual quality was lowered.

Camera
The Neo comes with a 5MP front camera and 13MP rear camera with LED flash. The camera quality is good, and can focus very close objects. However the picture quality looks washed out. Check the sample images especially of the Maruti logo (look at the red colour) and the flowers.

It can record 1080p videos at 30fps, the output is good and like the still photos the video quality is also washed out. I am not sure if a software update will fix this issue.

Others
Sound is loud and clear. No issues with 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. The Flip cover is magnetic it will switch on the screen when you open the flip and when closed the S-View window will light up showing the time and notifications if any. You can control some apps via the S-Window.

Battery
It is with a 2200 mAh removable battery. I used the handset for 29 minutes running benchmark apps battery dropped by 11%. When I played the high end games for 16 minutes battery dropped by 9% and while viewing 1080p video for 25 minutes with full brightness and Wi-Fi switched on the battery dropped by 11 percent. The max temperature I encountered during the review was 40 degrees.

You can expect battery backup of 3 to 5 hours.

Verdict
For the price this is a good buy specially when it comes with a 2GB RAM and 8GB storage and of course it is octa core powered, plus the free S-view flip cover. The performance is also good. Having said that the back cover does not fit properly, camera quality could have been better and battery backup is average. In spite of all this the handset is still tempting at Rs. 11,990. It is the cheapest octa core available in India, if you are looking for a better octa then check out the Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+ handset.

WickedLeak’s Wammy Neo is now available for Rs. 11,990 with Rs. 500 as shipping charges.
