The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 model S7582 is upgraded version of the popular Galaxy S Duos handset. Duos 2 comes with dual core processing power and is priced a little more than its predecessor.

The box contains the handset, 1500 mAh battery, travel charger, data cable, warranty card, user manual and earphone.

Design and Display
There is no difference between the S Duos and S Duos 2. In fact almost all of the Galaxy handsets follow the same traditional design pattern. The rear side is textured. Handset weight is 120 grams with battery. Thickness is 10.86mm, breadth is 62.79mm and length is 121.26mm.

The power button is placed on right, volume rockers on left, 3.5mm audio jack on the top and micro USB port at the bottom with built in mic. The build quality and finishing is very good.

TFT touchscreen is 4 inches supporting resolution of 800×480 pixels resolution with 16M colors. The viewing angle is good. There are proximity, accelerometer, magnetic and orientation sensors. Interestingly there is no light sensor (as seen using the CPU-Z app). The touch is smooth and responsive.

Memory and OS
The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582 comes with 768MB RAM and 4GB storage along with micro SD card support of up to 64GB. 2GB space is allocated for device memory and free RAM on first boot is 339 MB. Unfortunately you cannot install / move apps on the external storage. OTG is also not supported. Android 4.2 runs the show with TouchWiz user interface.

Performance
The Duos 2 comes powered by dual core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. It houses the Hawaii board Cortex A9 dual core processor coupled with Broadcom VideoCore IV HW GPU. This no doubt is much better than its predecessor the S Duos.

Benchmark scores

  • Quadrant Standard – 3255.
  • AnTuTu – 11945.
  • Vellamo – HTML5 1501, Metal 398.
  • Nenamark 2 – 55.4 fps
  • Multi touch : 2 points.

The benchmark results are quite impressive considering the hardware.  It does compete with the handsets powered by 1.3GHz dual core MT6572 and performance is a little better, however price wise the MediaTek chipset are cheaper.

Gaming
The hardware is very good for the price and capable of playing high end games, unfortunately you get access to limited internal storage space. You cannot install apps on external storage. I tried installing Modern Combat 4 and Asphalt8 but it could not install cause of less space.

I could install Dead Trigger 2 game that is under 300 MB. The game play was very smooth. Do check the gaming video.

Entertainment
The 1080p videos does not work. I tried playing FHD video in MX player – in H/W mode the screen is blank and in S/W mode its kinda slow motion. However HD videos (720p) videos work with ease in H/W and S/W modes.

Camera
There is 5MP AF rear camera with LED flash and 0.3MP front camera. The front camera output is not at all good. The rear camera does pretty good job with still images as well as 720p videos. It can record 720p videos at 30fps.

Others
The handset supports 3G (21Mbps), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS with GLONASS. All of the features worked well without any issues. GPS lock is very fast under 6 seconds.

Battery
The 1500 mAh battery as per the company gives talk time of up to 8 hours on 3G networks. Battery dropped by 7% when running the benchmark apps for around 16 minutes and 6% drop while playing Dead Trigger 2 game for around 12 minutes. You can expect 4 hours of continuous heavy usage on a full charge.

Verdict
S Duos 2 comes with better hardware as compared to S Duos. Here are the differences.

S Duos S Duos 2
Cortex A5 Cortex A9 (dual core)
Adreno 200 GPU VideoCore GPU
Android ICS Android Jelly Bean 4.2
GPS with A-GPS GPS with GLONASS
3G (7.2Mbps) 3G (21Mbps)

It is a powerful handset at an affordable price tag. Unfortunately it cannot save apps on external storage (though rooting will solve this issue). The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 is a better option in the dual core category, i.e. if you are ready to spend approx Rs. 10,000.
