The Samsung Galaxy Y Android 2.3 powered smartphone from Samsung is now available in India. The Galaxy Y from Samsung comes with an 832 MHz processor with a 3 inch QVGA screen. This handset is targeted for the youth and hence the character ‘Y’. The Galaxy Y is different from the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro which is also an Android phone with QWERTY keypad. If you compare the Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro the hardware features are nearly the same.
Samsung recently launched the Samsung Wave 3 with the Bada OS and within the coming weeks or months you can expect some more launches. So stay tuned. As for now let’s check out what the Samsung Galaxy Y has in store and its price.
Samsung Galaxy Y Features
The Samsung Galaxy Y supports 3G (HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps) / 2G networks and houses a 3 inch QVGA touch screen display with 320 by 240 resolutions. 832 MHz single core processor powers this handset that runs on the Android 2.3 gingerbread OS. The handset weighs just 97.5 grams with 104 x 58 x 11.5mm dimensions.
As far as the camera is concerned it is not that great, with a 2 megapixel resolution there is not much to talk about. The camera quality is just good enough for viewing on computer or uploading on Facebook. Video recording is also supported.
Entertainment wise the Samsung Galaxy Y does well it can play MP3, WAV, MIDI and some more commonly used audio files. Videos in MPEG4, 3GPP, MKV, H.263 and H.264 format are also supported. There is a built in FM radio (stereo) with RDS. You can listen to audio files over the built in speaker or connecting external headphones using the 3.5mm audio jack.
When you switch on the phone the Samsung TouchWiz default interface takes over. On the Samsung Galaxy Y you can check your emails (pop3 / IMAP), can sync contact and calendar with your Google Account, access Google services that come preloaded like Google Search, YouTube, access Android Market, Maps, Google Talk and Gmail. Apart from this document viewer app also comes pre-installed that can read Microsoft office files and the popular Swype app that helps you type / Swype faster.
The Samsung Galaxy Y comes with 160 MB internal memory and supports microSD card up to 32 GB. Within the box pack you get 2GB card absolutely free. Other features are GPS, Bluetooth Version 3.0 + HS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and USB 2.0. This handset also comes with other sensors that you find on other smartphones like the Proximity, Digital Compass and Accelerometer.
The 1200 mAh battery (Li-ion) within the Samsung Galaxy Y gives standby time of 14 days and talktime of around 5 hours.
Samsung Galaxy Y Price in India

Verdict : The specification is good, however the camera quality is pathetic. There are options like the Micromax A70 that comes with a 5 MP camera, with a bit less of processing power but cheaper than this model. If you are going brand wise then you will like the Galaxy Y, but there are many Android phones available in the market priced below Rs. 10,000, for me instead of the Samsung Galaxy Y, I prefer the Micromax A70 or the Micromax A85.
