As expected Micromax will be launching CyanogenMod based smartphones in India. They will launch it via the Yu brand (Yu Televentures – a Micromax subsidiary). Most likely the first handset will be made available in December for an affordable price tag.
The handset price range and the specification are not yet disclosed. But it would generally be the same stuffs that are available in the market, probably MediaTek quad core and so on. These Yu handsets will run Cyanogenmod out of the box.
Micromax and Cyanogen have entered a partnered wherein Cyanogen will provide software support. So the next Micromax phone will be under the Yu Brand and it will hit the stores soon. This is a very good move as many manufacturers are unable to provide software support / updates. Cyanogen is popular OS (based on Android) that is available on many devices as third party ROM. Many users are using it and are experiencing better performance and stability.
It looks like Micromax will be following the same strategy as followed by Xiaomi, they are going to tie-up with online stores directly that will help lower the cost and most likely these handsets will not be available offline (i.e. in retail stores).
Micromax working with Cyanogen is indeed good news and let’s wait and watch what they come up with, the specifications and most importantly the price tag, stay tuned.
