Lava Iris 505 review 1.3GHz dual core with 5 inch screen

Lava Iris 505 is powered by dual core processor running Android 4.2 with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. This handset comes with 5MP rear auto focus camera with flash. Iris 505 is priced at under Rs. 9000.

Box pack
Inside the box there is the handset, screen guard, travel charger, 2000 mAh battery, user manual, data cable, earphone and free flip cover.

Design, Display and OS
The Lava Iris 505 weighs about 178 grams with battery, thickness 9.48, breadth 74.76mm and length 149.48mm. Rear side is with matte finish. It’s a big handset with 5 inch screen. The volume rockers are placed on the left, power button on the right, 3.5mm audio jack on the top along with micro USB port.

The TFT LCD screen is 5 inches supporting 854×480 pixels resolution (FWVGA) with 16M colors. The viewing angle is okay. There are accelerometer, light and proximity sensors. Lava has incorporated the gesture control feature (the same as seen on the Lava Iris 504q) on the 505. You can wave your hand to click images, move to next image in image gallery, etc. Touch is smooth /responsive. The Iris 505 does come with led notification.

Memory and Storage
This handset houses 512MB RAM (200 MB free) and 4GB storage (1.1GB free), you can install apps and games on external storage. OTG is not supported, I tried connecting pen drive using OTG cable and got a blank screen, I had to remove the battery and restart the system again.

Performance
Lava Iris 505 also comes powered by MT6572 dual core chipset clocked at 1.3GHz with Mali 400 GPU. This is the same hardware that we have seen on Micromax A74 and XOLO A500S, and probably will find many more handsets launched with the same.

Benchmark scores

  • Quadrant Benchmark : 3286.
  • Antutu Benchmark : 10600.
  • Vellamo Benchmark : HTML5 – 1653, Metal – 435.
  • Nenamark2 : 39.8fps.
  • Multi Touch : 3 point Multi Touch.

5MP AF camera and Entertainment
This handset comes with an auto focus camera of 5 megapixel resolution with LED flash. The still picture and video is better that as seen on other MT6572 handset with fixed focus camera. Do check the sample images at the end. You can play full HD videos in H/W mode using MX player. There is a front camera of VGA resolution.

Others
3G, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi seem good. GPS locked within 20 seconds. Sound is loud and clear (in-call/speaker).

Battery
Removable battery is of a good 2000 mAh capacity with up to 6 hours talk-time on 2G and 4 hours on 3G. I played some high end games for 14 minutes – battery level dropped to 8 percent.

Lava Iris 505 verdict
Same stuff (MT6572 + Mali 400) as seen on MMX A74 and XOLO A500S. The only difference between these handsets is the screen size and battery mAh, the Xolo A500S comes with smaller screen and Iris 505 with bigger screen as well as a bigger battery. The handset is priced at under Rs. 9,000 (some stores selling for as low as Rs. 8,300). However, there is not much of a difference between quad core handset that is available for about the same price or a little cheaper. Instead of this the Xolo Q700 at Rs. 8,761 seems a better option.
