Huawei Kirin 970 10nm chipset announced, octa core with dedicated NPU

At the IFA 2017, Huawei announced their new in-house made chipset the Kirin 970 with 10nm process. This is octa core SoC and what makes it unique and in fact the first in the world is the dedicated NPU that it houses.

NPU is Neural Processing Unit. What is the NPU? – in terms of performance this NPU can recognize about 2000 images in just about 1 minutes, now if the same is to be done without NPU it will be around 100 images per minute. So NPU will drastically enhance the performance.

Huawei also mentioned that the Kirin 970 is up to 25x performing and 50x more efficient when compared with Cortex A73 quad core CPU cluster. Kirin 970 chipset is octa core powered 2.4GHz x Corte A73 (quad core) + 1.8GHz Cortex A53 (quad core).

This is a TSMC 10nm process and using G72MP12 GPU plus Neural Processing Unit (NPU) 1.92T FP16 OPS. This SoC supports HDR10, 4K encoding at 30fps and 4K decoding at 60fps. Other features are 4G (Category 18 FDD / TDD).
