Design
The Gionee S Plus is packed inside a beautiful body (plastic + metal frame). The metal frame comes with shiny silver parallel borders that look great. Handset has got a curvy design. The back panel is awesome and it is what makes the handset stand out – the diamond patterned back panel with glossy finishing. S Plus is available in different colour options and each of these colour give out a different unique effect.
Power button and volume rocker is on the right side, audio jack is on the top and there is a USB Type C port at the bottom. Weight with battery is 153 grams and dimensions are 76.66 x 154.77 x 7.39 (mm).
There is LED notification and following sensors – accelerometer, light, proximity and magnetic.
This is a dual SIM handset – there is 2x micro SIM slots (4G works on both the SIM slots) and 1x micro SD card slot.
Display
S Plus sports a 5.5 inch AMOLED screen protected with corning gorilla glass 3 protection with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Colour reproduction, viewing angles and touch response are very good.
Memory, Storage and OS
Gionee S Plus comes with 3GB RAM and 16GB storage. On first boot you will get around 2GB free RAM and 11GB free internal storage space. Apps are getting installed on external storage. OTG is not supported (I tested with a USB Type C to micro USB adapter). S Plus is running Amigo 3.1 UI over Android Lollipop 5.1.
Performance
The handset houses the MediaTek MT6753 1.3GHz octa core processor (64 Bit) coupled with Mali T720 GPU. Did not find any issues with the performance, was smooth and lag free. Handset did not heat-up much, max temperature encountered was 38 degrees.

Gaming
I installed Asphalt 8 (on external storage), game was playable, smooth and lag free. Hardware can play high end games.
Camera
There is 13MP primary camera with LED flash support and front facing camera is of 5MP resolution. Camera quality is above average. Rear camera can shoot FHD videos. Camera samples below.

Others
4G worked (I am using 2300 band), no issues with WiFi, GPS (instant lock) and Bluetooth. Loudspeaker sound is loud and clear (thanks to DTS technology).
Battery
The 3150 mAh removable battery does a pretty decent job. You can expect about 4 to 5 hours of continuous usage (moderate to heavy) and handset will last for a day with moderate mixed usage.
Battery Performance
- Ran Benchmark – 16 minutes / battery % dropped by 5 / battery temp = 31 degrees.
- Played Asphalt 8 – for 17 minutes / battery dropped by 7% / battery temp = 38 degrees.
- Watched FHD video with full brightness (WiFi on) – for 38 minutes / battery dropped by 3% / battery temp was 28 degrees.
- Handset charging (wall charge) under 2 hours 30 minutes.

Verdict
Gionee S Plus is a power handset with very good build quality and finishing and impressive looks. The hardware is well known. USB Type C port is something unique. Overall the handset gives a decent performance. It is a good buy but with a premium price tag.
