The Gionee Gpad G3 comes powered by MediaTek quad core processor MT6589M chipset clocked at 1.2GHz. The key highlight is the 5.5 inch screen with FWVGA resolution. The GPad G3 is priced at approx Rs. 9,000.
G3 Box Pack
The contents: The GPad G3 handset (phablet), a good quality flip cover, 2250mAh Li-ion battery, warranty card, user guide, Gionee Service center list, travel charger, data cable, earphone and screen guard. In fact I found 2 screen guards in the box pack. SAR Value: 0.84 W/kg (Head) and 0.79 W/Kg (Body).
Design, Display and OS
The Gionee GPad G3 weight with battery is 188 grams. The dimensions are 79.57×157.30×9.68mm. The handset is bulky and the rear side is with a matte finish. The volume rockers and power button are placed on the right, 3.5mm audio jack on the top and Micro USB port on the bottom side. This is a dual SIM handset with dual standby mode.
Though the screen size of 5.5 inches may impress many users it however comes with a lower resolution of 854×480 pixels. The viewing angles are not that good, however the touch is smooth and responsive. There are accelerometer, light, proximity and magnetic sensors.
This handset runs on Android 4.2.1 with Amigo UI.
Memory and Storage
The G3 comes with minimal RAM of 512MB of which 138MB is available on the first boot. There is 4GB internal storage of which about 860MB is available for apps and 1.54 assigned as the phone storage. There is a micro SD card slot that can house 32GB external cards. You can install selected apps on external storage. OTG, however is not supported.
Performance
This handset comes with MT6589M chipset – it is a low performing chipset in the MT6589 family. This handset cannot record full HD videos and supports maximum qHD resolution. GPad G3 comes with 1.2GHz quad core processor cortex A7 (MT6589M) with PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU.
Benchmark scores
- Quadrant Standard – 4073.
- AnTuTu – 13728. (In AnTuTu benchmark the my Device section was showing Gionee Elife E7 instead of Gionee GPad G3, that was strange!).
- Vellamo – HTML5 1369, Metal 476.
- Nenamark 2 – 58.9 fps
- Multi touch : 5 points.
Camera and Entertainment
The rear camera is 5MP auto focus with LED flash support. The sill photo images and video recording are good enough. The front camera is of VGA resolution. The rear camera can record videos in 720p resolution. Sample images included at the end of this review.
GPad G3 can play full HD videos in S/W mode using the MX Player. I also tried the h265 – 720p video that also worked well in S/W mode.
Gaming review
The MC4 and Asphalt 8 both got installed on the external storage. Modern Combat 4 was pretty smooth, though occasionally you could feel it lagging. The Asphalt 8 however did not work. I tried setting the video quality to the lowest possible but still the game failed to work. It seems to it has something to do with the Amigo UI, probably Gionee might come up with a fix.
Others
Sound is loud and clear. 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked well. Got the first GPS lock within 30 seconds. The handset comes with many pre-installed apps including Du Battery saver, Gionee User feedback, UC Browser and many more. OTA updates are supported. Wireless Display and Wi-Fi direct is supported.
Battery performance
The battery of 2250 mAh may sound good but it is required for a screen of 5.5 inches. I ran the benchmark tools for about 18 minutes and the battery dropped by 7%. You can get a talk time of about 4 to 5 hours and with continuous usage (using all 4 cores) the handset will last for about 3 to 4 hours on battery power.
Verdict
If you are looking to buy a handset with a big screen this could be a good option. There are other 5.5 inch handsets available in the market and they are priced as per the hardware used, battery and screen resolution. The GPad G3 is available for under Rs. 9500. For the price tag it is a good buy, however do note that there are issues with software and some games may not work.
