Coolpad recently launched the Cool 1 handset in India for Rs. 13,999. The Coolpad Cool 1 comes with dual cameras on the back and is powered by Snapdragon 652 octa core processor. Is the Cool 1 worth the price and is the camera really good?

Coolpad Cool 1 Design, Display and OS

The Coolpad Cool 1 looks great, it is using a metal body with matte finishing with shiny silver borders. The handset looks exactly like the LeEco handset (LeEco is Coolpad’s largest shareholder), there is a text on the back that says LeEco inside.

Coolpad Cool 1 box pack

Cool 1 sports a 5.5 inch screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. There are borders on the screen but they don’t look that odd. The display also comes with corning gorilla glass protection. Color reproduction, viewing angles and touch response are very good.

This handset is running EUI 5.8.017S over Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

Coolpad Cool 1 Performance

The performance was smooth and lag free thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 64 bit octa core processor that the Cool 1 houses. It is clocked at 1.8GHz coupled with Adreno 510 GPU. Handset heats up with heavy usage – max battery temperature I encountered was 43 degrees (heat buildup is under control).

Coolpad Cool 1 Gaming

Hardware is well known, and quite powerful it can play many games. Asphalt 8 in high visual quality mode did very well, smooth and lag free.

Coolpad Cool 1 Camera

There are dual 13MP cameras on the back (13MP + 13MP) using SONY BSI sensor with f/2.0 aperture. One lens captures in black and white mode and other captures in color mode. With wide aperture mode you can shoot first, focus later. You can change the focus point and control the blurriness in the background (Bokeh effect) something what DSLR cameras can do. When using wide aperture mode it takes some time processing the images.

The dual cameras on the back are quite capable, if you know how to use them. Even for inexperienced user the output will still be much better than most smartphones.

Front camera is a 8MP shooter. This handset can record slow motion and 4K videos. Camera quality is excellent.

Others

There is finger print sensor on the back with mirror finishing, looks great and is fast and accurate. Sound is loud and clear, no issues with WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. There is audio jack and Infrared sensor. You can use the IR sensor to control electronic devices i.e. use your handset like a remote.

Reliance Jio works but you need to use that in SIM slot 1 (VoLTE support) – it does not work in SIM slot 2.

Google Play store by default was always using WiFi mode. To allow the app to use WiFi or Mobile net mode follow the steps mentioned below.

Go to system tool from main menu, then select downloads then tap the settings option in downloads and change to ‘No Limit’, this will enable you to download Play Store new apps/ updates using Mobile net too.

Coolpad Cool 1 Battery

There is a 4000 mAh non-removable battery. It gives very good backup. I was able to use the handset for almost 2 days with mixed usage. On a full charge you can expect 4 to 6 hours of non-stop moderate to heavy usage.

Coolpad Cool 1 Battery Performance (time / battery % drop / estimated battery temperature)

  • Running Benchmark app – 9 minutes / 3% / 36 degrees
  • Asphalt 8 game play – 17 minutes / 6% / 43 degrees
  • 4K video playback with full brightness (WiFi /4G on) – 11 minutes / 3% / 40 degrees.

It took me 2 hours 15 minutes to charge the handset from 14% to 100% using wall charger.

Verdict

A very good buy for the price and with dual camera that give excellent output when using wide aperture mode. Another handset the Honor 6X will be launched this month, that too will come with dual cameras, may be you would want to wait for a review and comparison of both the handsets.
